Q:

Is It Safe To Wear Contacts During The Corona COVID-19 Pandemic?

A:

As we are in the middle of a global pandemic, we have all become more aware of how easily virus particles spread. While most of us know that the mouth and nose are the major sources for possible contraction, Coronavirus can also spread through the eyes.

When an infected person speaks, coughs, or sneezes, in close proximity, the virus particles spray from their mouth or nose and may land on another person’s face. While it is probable that the particles could be inhaled into the nose or mouth, they may also enter through the eyes. Viral transmission may also occur if a surface containing the virus particles is touched and then hands are placed on the face and eyes.

Because of this, you may have heard it is preferable to avoid wearing contacts during the COVID-19 pandemic. In general, those wearing contact lenses are more at risk for eye infections and the spread of COVID-19 due to the fact that they touch their eyes more often than others—entering and removing of  contacts daily. That being said, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has suggested refraining from contacts and switching to glasses. Limiting the use of contact lenses is ideal and replacing them with glasses acts as a “shield” to provide some added protection for the eyes.

After the pandemic subsides, consider LASIK to eliminate the hassle for glasses or contacts. Glasses also have downsides while wearing a mask, often the glasses fog up and hinder the clarity of vision.  LASIK is affordable and we offer various financing options to work with any budget.  Keep in mind, LASIK provides a lifetime of savings factoring in the costs of purchasing glasses, contact lenses, contact lens solution, and costs associated with exam fittings.
