Visian® Toric ICL Options in San Antonio
San Antonio Eye Specialists offers various refractive vision correction options beyond LASIK. Patients that have high amounts of nearsightedness (myopia) plus astigmatism, may benefit from the Visian Toric ICL, or Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), created by STAAR Surgical. Our Medical Director, Nader Iskander, MD, FACS, a board-certified ophthalmologist, and fellowship-trained refractive specialist, was one of the first surgeons in the country to implant the Visian Toric ICL.
This revolutionary technology allows patients that are not good candidates for laser vision procedures, such as LASIK, to get the clear vision they deserve without the bothersome hassles of contact lenses or glasses. The majority of patients that receive the Vision Toric ICL achieve 20/20 or better vision.
“The Visian Toric ICL provides visual freedom for patients that are very nearsighted with astigmatism and not ideal candidates for LASIK or PRK. These patients are unable to see without visual aides such as glasses; even seeing their hands can be extremely blurry. An in-office procedure, in as little as 20 minutes, can be life changing,” explains Dr. Iskander.
Prior to October 2018, the only FDA approved ICL implant did not correct for astigmatism. Surgeons would often perform two separate procedures: the ICL surgery for the nearsightedness, followed by LASIK or PRK laser vision correction for the treatment of astigmatism. Now with the FDA approval of the STAAR Visian® Toric ICL, patients can have the satisfaction of knowing that only one surgery is needed to correct both nearsightedness and astigmatism.
Are You A Candidate For Toric ICL?
The Visian® Toric ICL is implanted in patients 21 – 45 years of age, who do not have cataracts and have not required cataract surgery.
It is designed for:
- the correction of nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism with less than or equal to -3.0D to less than -15.0D with cylinder of 1.0D to 4.0D.
- the reduction of myopic astigmatism ranging from greater than -15.0D to -20.0D with cylinder 1.0D to 4.0D at the spectacle
If you are very nearsighted with astigmatism, then the Visian Toric ICL may be a viable option for you.
Dr. Iskander will discuss your treatment options and visual expectations.
