iStent Inject: Glaucoma Treatment in San Antonio

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a disease that occurs when excess fluid builds up in the front part of the eye thereby causing damage to the optic nerve. The most common way to treat glaucoma is to lower the eye pressure by reducing the amount of fluid (aqueous humor) the eye produces or help fluid drain efficiently through the eye. Left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness for people age 60 or older (https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/what-is-glaucoma).

Unfortunately, there is no cure for glaucoma. The glaucoma treatment plan is to increase the drainage of fluid inside the eye which in turn lowers the internal eye pressure, or intraocular pressure (IOP). Treatment options for glaucoma typically vary from eye drops, laser treatment, or surgery. Glaucoma surgery can take the form of shunts, trabeculectomy, or MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery also called Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery).

Expert Glaucoma Relief

MIGS is the latest advancement in glaucoma treatment. It offers the benefits of lowering eye pressure while minimizing the risks involved with other more invasive glaucoma surgeries.

An ophthalmologist can perform MIGS by itself or in conjunction with cataract surgery as an outpatient procedure.

iStent inject is one of the MIGS implemented by Dr. Iskander as a surgical intervention for the management of glaucoma.  The iStent inject can help patients with mild to moderate glaucoma. Patients can take advantage of having this procedure performed during cataract surgery and still maintain the excellent safety profile of cataract surgery.

The iStent inject creates permanent channels or openings for improved flow of the aqueous humor. It can help lower the intraocular pressure and may reduce the dependence on IOP-lowering medication (Glaukos website reference:  https://www.glaukos.com/istent-inject-procedure/istent-inject-overview/ )

How Does iStent Work?

iStent Inject works through the insertion of 2 small stents into the trabecular meshwork of the eye. This is the part of the eye that is responsible for the drainage of the fluid inside the eye. The stents are the smallest medical device implants in the human body (https://www.glaukos.com/healthcare-professionals/istent-inject/).

iStent has clinically proven results to offer a safe and effective way to lower your eye pressure and potentially reduce your need for eye drops.
